EPDM, GRP or felt: compare the whole system

EPDM is a flexible rubber membrane, useful for covering a simple extension or garage roof with relatively few seams. GRP combines glass reinforcement with resin to create a rigid surface. Felt roofing uses layers with joints and edge details built into the system.

The best fit starts with the roof shape, the supporting deck and the number of outlets or raised features, rather than a claim that one material wins everywhere. A roof lantern creates corners and upstands that need careful treatment. A long narrow garage has a different set of details, while a dormer has junctions close to windows and the main roof.

Lewis checks these features before recommending the covering. He also looks at the existing falls, which direct rain towards the outlets. Even a roof described as flat needs a route for water to leave.

Your quote describes the preparation and edge work as well as the visible surface.

Replace the wet deck before covering it

A new membrane needs a sound base. Soft deck boards, sagging areas and old wet insulation need attention before a fresh surface is laid over them. Lewis checks the roof build-up and identifies what needs removing.

That avoids hiding damage beneath a covering which looks new but still rests on a poor substrate. Once the base is prepared, the roof system is fitted with its specified joints, trims and wall details. Upstands carry the covering above the main roof surface around walls and openings.

Outlets and gutter edges provide a continuous route off the roof. Insulation position and ventilation are considered as part of the roof construction, particularly above a heated room. The work finishes with the junctions and water route checked together.

If the room below also needs plastering after a leak, the weatherproofing is completed first so the interior repair starts beneath a sound roof.

Spot the difference between a surface fault and a failing roof

A split beside a trim is a local fault; a broad soft patch points to a problem below the surface. Repeated pooling, blistering and lifting joints each tell a different story. Tell Lewis where water gathers and which room or garage bay is affected.

The survey checks both the visible covering and the structure it relies on. Working time and cost depend on the size, access, stripping required and the number of roof features. Replacing the covering on a clear garage is less involved than rebuilding a roof around several lanterns and wall abutments.

Drying and curing requirements also differ between systems. Lewis explains the sequence for your chosen material, including the time before the roof surface can be disturbed. Use the free survey to compare options on the same basis: removal, deck preparation, insulation, covering, trims and disposal.

New roofs carry the 10 year guarantee, and no VAT is added to the quote.

Good to know

Straight answers before you book.

Can a new flat roof go over the old covering?

The condition of the deck and existing layers decides that. Wet insulation, soft boards or an unstable surface need removing so the replacement roof has a sound base.

Which flat roof lasts longest?

Material alone does not determine the result: deck preparation, junctions and water outlets matter throughout the roof. Lewis compares EPDM, felt and GRP for your building and provides a 10 year guarantee on new roofs.

Do you install EPDM, felt and GRP?

All three flat roof systems are included in the service. Lewis surveys the existing roof, its edges and flashings to agree the work for your building.

Do you repair leaking flat roofs?

Flat roof repairs are covered alongside replacement roofs. The survey looks at the leak and the surrounding roof condition before the repair is quoted.
