Decide what you want from the lawn area
Fresh turf creates a living lawn that changes with the seasons and needs mowing, watering and care. Artificial grass provides a manufactured surface with different preparation and cleaning needs. The right choice follows how you use the garden, the light it receives and the maintenance you want to take on.
Lewis discusses those priorities before quoting the area. Children, pets, garden furniture and routes to the shed all place different demands on a lawn. A small shaded patch is a different setting from a broad open garden.
Natural turf needs suitable soil and a period to establish; an artificial surface needs the correct base and edge fixing for its product. Lewis finishes the edges against patios and borders so the lawn sits neatly within the garden and keeps a clear shape. The lawn should have a useful shape for mowing or cleaning, rather than leave narrow strips that are difficult to maintain.
Lewis can plan those edges with the rest of the garden work.

Prepare the ground for the chosen surface
Old vegetation and unsuitable material are removed before the new lawn surface is installed. For turf, the ground is prepared to provide a suitable soil bed and even level. The turf is laid with close joints and the area is left ready for its establishment care.
The early watering and use of the lawn matter after the installation is finished. Artificial grass follows a different build-up, with a prepared base, joints and perimeter fixing suited to the product. A soft or uneven base will still affect a new surface laid over it.
Levels need to meet paths, patios and borders without awkward lips. Lewis checks those junctions at the survey and includes the preparation in the quote. On heavier Fenland ground, the existing conditions deserve particular attention rather than treating the lawn as a cosmetic covering.
The aim is a finished area that works with the surrounding garden and the way water moves across it.
Plan the aftercare and the route through the garden
New turf needs time to establish before it takes normal wear. Plan an alternative route to the shed or washing line so the fresh lawn is not used as a footpath immediately. Lewis explains the care needed at handover.
Artificial grass has its own cleaning and brushing requirements, especially around pets and overhanging trees. Cost depends on the area, surface specification and the amount of ground preparation. Removing an old lawn, correcting levels and forming new edges add work.
Access affects the movement of soil, base materials and waste, particularly in enclosed gardens. The installation can be planned with patios, fencing and raised beds so heavier work happens before the new green area is finished. Bring the whole garden plan to the free survey and discuss which parts need changing together.
Lewis sets out the preparation and chosen surface in a written quote, manages the work and adds no VAT to the price.

Good to know
Straight answers before you book.
Which is better for a shaded garden: turf or artificial grass?
The light, soil and intended use need considering together. Lewis assesses the area and explains the preparation and care requirements of each option before you choose.
Can I use new turf straight after it is laid?
The turf needs an establishment period before normal wear. Lewis explains watering and use at handover so the new lawn has a suitable start.
Do you install both turf and artificial grass?
Both are covered, with the preparation and installation agreed around the existing ground and the surface you choose.
Can the new lawn meet an existing patio neatly?
Lewis plans the lawn level and edge against the paving before installation. If the patio also needs changing, the heavier preparation is completed before the lawn surface is finished.
